No Participation Trophies in the Job Hunt: A Reality Check

Does Everyone Deserve A Trophy? 🏆

Hello Career Bloomers!

I started working on a podcast to help people answer interview questions. As you know I post on TikTok about how to answer the top interview questions and the top question I have seen confuse people lately is "Why do you want to work for this company?".

I feel like I have explained it more times than I can count... Companies want passion, Companies want to hear that you are a hard worker. It finally hit me, applicants want participation trophy's... or paychecks.

So let's deep dive into what I mean..

The Shift from Hopeful to Hired In The Job Hunt

When you click "submit" on an application, you aren't just sending your information into a black hole. You're entering a race with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of other candidates. Your resume is one among a pile. Your cover letter is a brief argument for your value. And every single person you're up against wants the same thing you do.

The people who get hired are the ones who embrace this reality. They understand that a passive approach of simply hoping to be noticed isn't enough. They take an active, competitive stance. They see every detail of the application process as an opportunity to gain an edge. Just as a star athlete doesn’t just show up on game day, a top job candidate doesn't just "wing it." They train, they practice, and they come prepared to perform.

The Hard Work Pays Off! 💸

Why "Just a Paycheck" is a Losing Strategy

We all work to earn a living, but if your motivation starts and ends with money, hiring managers will notice. They aren't looking to give you a paycheck; they’re looking to invest in a valuable team member. They want to hire someone who is genuinely motivated by their company’s mission and who is excited to contribute.

Think about it from their perspective. A candidate who says they just want the job because "it’s close to home and the salary is good" is also saying, "I’ll leave the second something better comes along." This mindset signals a lack of long-term commitment and passion.

To stand out, you need to show that you're passionate about their company and what they do. Frame your responses around value, not just dollars. Articulate how your skills can solve their specific problems and how you are excited about the projects and challenges that the role presents.

Your Winning Strategy: 4 Steps to Stand Out

So, how do you compete and win in a crowded job market? Here is the game plan.

Let's Make A Plan!

1. Customize for the Win

The most common mistake job seekers make is sending out the same generic resume and cover letter to every company. Don’t just spam applications; target them.

  • Deconstruct the Job Description: Read the job description and highlight keywords related to required skills, technologies, and responsibilities.

  • Mirror the Language: Weave those keywords and phrases into your resume and cover letter. This isn't just about passing an Applicant Tracking System (ATS); it's about showing the human reader that you've done your homework and are a perfect fit for the specific role.

2. Network Your Way In

A staggering number of jobs are never even advertised publicly. They are filled through employee referrals and professional networks. Your network is your biggest competitive advantage.

  • Go Beyond the Application: Find employees at your target companies on LinkedIn and send a personalized message. Ask thoughtful questions about their role or the company culture.

  • Build Relationships, Not Just Leads: Your goal isn't to ask for a job directly. It’s to build a genuine professional relationship. This creates a direct line to a hiring manager and positions you as a referral, not just a random applicant.

3. Ace the Interview Prep

An interview is a performance, and to perform well, you need to rehearse.

  • Deep Research: Go beyond the company website. Read recent press releases, study their mission statement, and follow their social media to understand their latest projects.

  • Practice Your Answers: Prepare responses to common interview questions, but don't just memorize them. Internalize the core message so you can deliver it with confidence and authenticity. Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror to refine your delivery.

4. Quantify Your Value

Your resume isn’t just a list of duties; it’s a showcase of your accomplishments.

  • From "Did" to "Achieved": Instead of saying, “I managed the social media accounts,” say, “I increased social media engagement by 30% in six months by implementing a new content strategy.”

  • Use the STAR Method: For every bullet point on your resume, think about the Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Use numbers, percentages, and tangible outcomes to prove your worth.

Final Thoughts

The good news is that your success in the job hunt is largely within your control. You can’t change how many other people apply for a job, but you can control your mindset and the effort you put in.

So, let's leave the participation trophies on the shelf. It’s time to start competing and winning. Remember, a job isn't just a paycheck; it's an opportunity. And you have to show up prepared to earn it.
