I had coffee with a friend a few years back who was eighteen months into a job search. Not eighteen weeks. Eighteen months. She had a solid resume, a real network, and a work history that would make most hiring managers sit up. She was applying constantly. She was doing everything she'd been told to do.


That was the problem. She was doing everything she'd been told to do in 2014.

Here's the thing nobody wants to say out loud, so I'll say it: the job market didn't break. It changed, quietly, in about four different places at once, and nobody sent out a memo. If your search feels harder than it should, it's probably not because you got worse. It's because you're playing by a rulebook that got rewritten while you had a job.
