The Fluff Fallacy: Welcome to Day Seven!

Welcome back, Career Bloomers.

Today we are tackling one of the biggest lies in the professional world: the term "soft skills." Calling communication and emotional intelligence "soft" is like calling a foundation "optional." It is a misnomer designed to make you think these abilities are secondary to your technical talent.

I have a truth-bomb for you: I can teach a smart person how to use a software package or a power tool in a week; I cannot easily teach a jerk how to be someone I actually want to sit next to for eight hours a day. In the big leagues: being likable is not a personality trait: it is a high-level career strategy. If you are technically brilliant but socially radioactive: your career has a very low ceiling.
