I Read 300 Resumes Today. Here's Why I Skipped Yours.

I read 300 resumes today. Most of the ones I skipped, I skipped on paper. But let me tell you about the one I skipped after the phone screen.

I'll call him Derek. Derek's resume was perfect. Every keyword from the job description. Advanced Excel and SQL reporting. Salesforce administration. "Led a team of 12 through a full CRM migration, increasing pipeline visibility by 40%." He sailed through the system and landed right at the top of my yes pile. I was genuinely excited to call him.

Annoyed woman

Ten minutes in, I asked him to walk me through one of those SQL reports. Long pause. "I've used it a little." Okay. Tell me about leading that team of 12? "Well, I trained a couple of the new people." And the 40%? He didn't know where that number came from.

Here's the thing: Derek was a solid candidate. Good attitude, real experience, honest once we got talking. He just wasn't the candidate on that page. His resume qualified for the job. Derek didn't.

So I asked who wrote it. "ChatGPT helped me out." And that's when it clicked. The AI didn't make Derek look better. It made him look like somebody else, and then it left him alone on a phone call to explain that somebody.

AI Will Literally Fill In the Blanks
